Hiring Process

A candidate is required to successfully complete each stage of the process before advancing to the subsequent one. Initially, the candidate submits an online application to the Human Resources department of Rockdale County. Following this, Rockdale County Fire Rescue (RCFR) Administration Division reviews each application to identify any disqualifying factors that may prevent the candidate from moving forward.

RCFR permits lateral ranks depending on the positions available and their current status.

Written Exam

As part of the hiring process, County Fire Rescue (RCFR) administers a standardized written examination. This assessment evaluates essential skills in reading comprehension, writing, and mathematics to ensure candidates meet the foundational requirements for success in the fire service.

Physical Agility Test (PAT)

The physical agility test is conducted by the personnel of the RCFR Training Division. This test is quite challenging and requires candidates to be in good physical condition. It consists of ten stations that assess the candidates’ skills in performing various tasks within a set time limit. Candidates must adhere to a dress code that includes a T-shirt, pants, and closed-toe shoes.

Interview

A panel interview will be conducted by selected RCFR executive staff for the candidates.

Background Check

A comprehensive background check is mandatory for all candidates seeking employment with the Rockdale County Fire Rescue.

Polygraph and Psychological Evaluation

To ensure the integrity and comprehensiveness of the background investigation, a licensed examiner will administer a polygraph test to all candidates to verify their background information. In addition, to assess their mental and emotional preparedness for the unique needs of a fire service career, candidates will be required to complete a written and clinical psychological evaluation with a licensed psychologist.

Physical Exam

The physical assessment is performed by a physician to determine the applicant’s capability to execute the responsibilities associated with RCFR.

Final Interview

Our selection process at Rockdale County Fire Rescue focuses on identifying the best candidates to join our department. We are enthusiastic about the prospect of you joining our team. The final interview will be carried out by various members of the Executive team, including the Fire Chief.

Rockdale County Fire Rescue Recruit School

The training program for Rockdale County Fire Rescue at the is divided into two phases: emergency medical training and firefighter training, spanning a total of approximately 36 weeks.

Emergency Medical Technician Training

The first phase of recruit school is dedicated to training as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). The initial weeks focus on basic EMT training, where recruits gain experience by working with professional emergency responders to observe essential first responder skills, along with clinical rotations at fire stations or on ambulances. These rotations allow recruits to encounter real-life situations and apply the practical skills they have learned in the classroom. A typical day in the classroom consists of eight hours of both lectures and practical exercises. Recruits are required to successfully pass all major tests during their basic EMT training. After completing the RCFR final exam, they must also pass the written and practical assessments from the National Registry of EMT.

Firefighter Training

The fire side represents the second phase of recruit school. Throughout this phase, recruits will receive both theoretical instruction and practical training in a field environment on the training grounds, utilizing the newest edition of the IFSTA training manual, “Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations.” Recruits will demonstrate the techniques learned in the classroom through physical practice on the training grounds. Daily physical training will also be incorporated into the recruit school designed to improve personal fitness and teamwork skills. At the conclusion of the training program, recruits will be evaluated for NPQ Firefighter 1, NPQ Firefighter 2, and NPQ Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations levels to become certified firefighters in Georgia.
