Keep Conyers–Rockdale Beautiful Launches “Toil, Soil & Paws” Initiative April 1 – June 30

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. – Keep Conyers-Rockdale Beautiful (KCRB) is launching Toil, Soil & Paws, a countywide environmental stewardship initiative running from April 1 through the end of June. The campaign connects recycling, composting, pet stewardship, water conservation, and community cleanups under one clear message: everyday actions create lasting environmental impact.

Throughout the spring, residents can participate in recycling events, shredding and electronics drives, composting and rain barrel workshops, pet adoption awareness efforts, and community cleanups across Conyers and Rockdale County.

The initiative focuses on reducing litter and waste, protecting local waterways, improving park cleanliness, and encouraging responsible pet ownership. By aligning cleanup events, recycling opportunities, and educational workshops, KCRB aims to increase volunteer engagement and strengthen partnerships across county departments and community organizations.

“This initiative brings together the work we’re already doing and gives residents simple, practical ways to get involved,” said Post 1 Commissioner Tuwanya Smith of KCRB. “Toil, Soil & Paws is about working together for cleaner parks, healthier soil, and stronger neighborhoods.”

Keep Conyers–Rockdale Beautiful Launches Their First CULTIVATE Initiative Recycling Workshop with a Community Composting Event

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. – Keep Conyers–Rockdale Beautiful (KCRB) is proud to kick off its CULTIVATE Spring Stewardship Campaign with its first official workshop, focused on composting and sustainable living.

The Composting Workshop will take place on Friday, April 24 at 6:00 PM at the UGA Extension Center, 1127 West Ave SW, Conyers, GA 30012.

This hands-on workshop will introduce residents to the fundamentals of composting, including what materials can be composted, how to get started at home, and how composting helps reduce waste while improving soil health. Participants will leave with practical tools they can use right away.

Space is limited and participation is encouraged.

“This workshop sets the tone for what CULTIVATE is all about, giving our community real tools to take pride in where we live and how we care for it,” says KCRB’s Executive Director Post 1 Commissioner Tuwanya Smith.

The CULTIVATE Initiative runs through June 30 and brings together beautification, conservation, recycling, and community engagement under one unified effort to keep Rockdale County clean and thriving.

Rockdale Fire Rescue Launches Community Smoke Alarm Blitz To Save Lives In Local Neighborhoods

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. – Rockdale Fire Rescue, in partnership with the American Red Cross and local volunteers, will conduct a critical smoke alarm installation blitz on Saturday, March 21, beginning at 8:00 a.m. in the Country Lane Estates and Kingston Woods Subdivision neighborhoods.

The life-saving initiative aims to install free smoke alarms in homes that need them while educating residents about fire safety practices that can mean the difference between life and death.

“Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half,” said James Robinson, Fire Chief for Rockdale Fire Rescue. “This community blitz is about more than just installing devices – it’s about creating a culture of fire safety awareness that protects our neighbors, our families, and our community.”

EVENT DETAILS:

What: Free Smoke Alarm Installation & Fire Safety Education Blitz

When: Saturday, March 21, 8:00 a.m.

Who: Rockdale Fire Rescue, American Red Cross volunteers, community volunteers

Cost: FREE to residents

Trained firefighters and Red Cross volunteers will go door-to-door installing smoke alarms, checking existing alarms, replacing batteries, and providing critical fire safety education to residents. Each participating household will receive:

• Free smoke alarm installation
• Battery replacements for existing alarms
• Home fire safety assessment
• Fire escape planning guidance
• Educational materials on fire prevention

Residents of Country Lane Estates and Kingston Woods Subdivision are encouraged to be home on March 21 to participate in this free program. Those who cannot be present but wish to schedule an installation should contact Rockdale Fire Rescue at (770) 278-8401.

Intermittent Lane Closures Coming To I-20 for Courtesy Parkway Extension Project

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. – Rockdale County Department of Transportation (RDOT), in partnership with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), will intermittently close portions of Interstate 20 to perform work for the new Courtesy Parkway Bridge over I-20 during the evening hours of Monday, March 2 and Tuesday, March 3 with crews wrapping up the work on the morning of Wednesday, March 4.

During this work, drivers can experience several changes in driving conditions:

• Traffic Pacing Operation on Eastbound and Westbound I-20 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Intermittent closures on I-20 Between Highway 138 and North Salem Road.
• Traffic will be released at intermittent times during the proposed work.

“The Courtesy Parkway Bridge project is a critical investment in Rockdale County’s transportation infrastructure.” said Brian Kelley, Director of Transportation for Rockdale County. “We understand these temporary closures may cause some inconvenience, and we appreciate the patience and cooperation of our community as we work to complete this important project safely and efficiently.”

To avoid impacts with the Traffic Pacing Operation, the suggested detours are indicated below:

Westbound I-20: Take Exit 84 (Salem Rd) Take North Salem Dr. to Dogwood Dr. SE to WB Old Covington Hwy SE to SB Hwy. 138 to 1-20

Eastbound I-20: Take Exit 82 (Hwy 138) to SB SR 138 to EB Flat Shoals Rd. SE to NB North Salem Rd. to 1-20

Closures on I-20 are rolling/pacing operations and not full closures.

Please note that this schedule may change due to weather or other unexpected conditions. Drivers should anticipate delays and seek alternate routes if possible. A map of alternate routes is attached.
